Lesotho 2026: Day 13

Today the habitat for humanity crew worked on making tresses for the roof (the frame, essentially) and building up more of the walls in the morning and building the interior wall and placing the door frame in the afternoon. Unlike yesterday, today was very relaxed, and the weather reflected it. It was sunny and warm all day, so we had to apply sunscreen much more frequently than we have been previously. It was amazing to see just how much precision goes into all facets of what we are doing. No wood went to waste when making the tresses, and all thatโ€™s left is 14 door stopper shaped bits of wood. Although the work can feel monotonous, we find ways to make our own fun while we work like holding competitions on who can hammer a nail in the fewest hits or by having impromptu karaoke (our favorite was Paramour). Even though today was less physically taxing than prior days , we still worked hard and got a lot done. We are definitely looking forward to a nice break tomorrow!

Today, we did some more beautiful painting! We had a few volunteers from the National University of Lesotho (a few more than we expected even!) so we were able to get a lot done. In grade 7, where I've been working, most of the surfaces were given a new, slightly darker coat of paint. They had to dry for most of the day. We did get a nice map of Lesotho up, however, districts and all. Grade 6 is mostly done! Lots of great diagrams made by our talented crew. We also had a good group to work on painting base coats in the 1-5 classrooms. The 5th grade classroom's coat is excellent! I've personally made it a goal to paint Lesotho flags over the 1-5 doors, which has proven to be a little easier than I thought, even considering the height of the top.

Expecting 6 volunteers, we brought along some extra lunches. We ended up with 12! which is great, but we had to feed the people. We decided to pool together our meals in order to feed everyone. It was a beautiful display of kindness, and it restored my faith in humanity fully.

After our work days, a local rapper named Morasa performed for our group. He was, in brief, awesome. He played four songs, each with distinctive styles, and the crowd was hype central. We had a great time. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a presence on streaming or social media as of yet, so the folks back home may have to wait a while for concert footage if they're interested. It was probably the nichest concert I've attended so far, and that's saying something!
